The 488-day pathway from fresher to software engineer
Not a list of topics to go and learn somewhere else. Every one of the 488 days has a written lesson attached to it, in order, from what a CPU is on day one through to running an AI system in production and converting an interview.
Pick Java or Python. 14 of the 16 stages are identical either way — networking, databases, architecture, system design, DevOps and cloud do not care which language you type in — and both routes end in the same place.

Two tracks, one destination
Java Developer → AI Engineer
Java · Spring Boot · React · PostgreSQL · Redis · Docker · AWS, then AI engineering in Python
The widest hiring surface in India. Almost every service company and MNC interviews on Java and Spring, and Java doubles as a strong DSA language.
Python Developer → AI Engineer
Python · FastAPI · React · PostgreSQL · Redis · Docker · AWS, then AI engineering in Python
The shortest route if Python is already your language, and the most direct line into AI and data roles — the AI stage is Python either way.
11 stages carry no stack-specific note at all — they transfer to MERN, .NET or anything else you end up interviewing on. Across both tracks there are 1005 written lessons; you read the 488 on whichever track you pick.
All 16 stages, in order
Each stage lists why it is there and what you can do by the end of it.
- Stage 0Days 1–22
Ground Zero: How Computers And The Web Actually Work
Most people use the web for years without ever opening it up. This stage opens it — and it covers the exact questions that end first interviews.
Explain what a server is, what HTML is, and what WebSockets are — with no hesitation.
- Stage 1Days 23–77
Java MasteryJava track
Java doubles as your DSA language and your backend language, so every hour spent here pays you twice.
Whiteboard HashMap internals and the Java Memory Model. Write flawless interview Java.
Python MasteryPython track
Python doubles as your DSA language and your backend language, so every hour spent here pays you twice.
Whiteboard dict internals and the GIL. Write flawless interview Python.
On another stack? On MERN? Swap this for a JavaScript/TypeScript deep-dive — event loop, prototypes, async, memory. On .NET? C# fundamentals. Keep whichever language you actually interview in.
- Stage 2Days 78–101
Professional Software Engineering
The difference between someone who codes and someone companies pay to code.
Use Git properly, work in Linux, write clean tested code, debug by hypothesis not guessing.
- Stage 3Days 102–129
Backend Engineering (Concepts, Framework-Free)
Learn auth, caching and rate limiting BEFORE Spring — or you'll only know Spring's opinion of them.
Design a full API contract on paper — auth, permissions, errors, pagination, rate limits.
- Stage 4Days 130–185
Spring & Spring Boot MasteryJava track
The stack that gets freshers hired at Indian MNCs. Spring hides a lot, which is why Stage 3 comes first.
Build and defend a production Spring Boot service — JWT, RBAC, JPA without N+1, Redis, tests.
FastAPI & Production PythonPython track
The Python backend stack that ships. FastAPI hides less than Django does, which is why you can still see the Stage 3 concepts working underneath it.
Build and defend a production FastAPI service — JWT, RBAC, SQLAlchemy without N+1, Redis, a real queue, tests.
On another stack? On MERN? Express or NestJS. On Python? Django or FastAPI. Stage 3 teaches these concepts framework-free precisely so this stage is swappable.
- Stage 5Days 186–213
Database Engineering
Every backend interview goes here. Slow queries are the most common real-world backend problem.
Read a query plan, fix a slow query live, and defend Postgres vs Mongo for any system.
- Stage 6Days 214–247
Frontend Engineering
Shipping a React app and understanding one are two different skills. This stage closes the gap.
Explain React's rendering model and reconciliation. Debug a broken useEffect and say why it broke.
On another stack? React is the default because it dominates Indian job listings. Vue and Angular map onto the same concepts — component model, state, rendering.
- Stage 7Days 248–297
Full Stack Integration
Two projects you can defend line by line. Built by hand. This is what interviews dig into.
Survive a 45-minute project deep-dive where every decision you made is attacked.
- Stage 8Days 298–321
Software Architecture & Low-Level Design
LLD rounds are standard at product companies and increasingly at service companies.
Take a requirement to working Java classes in 45 minutes while narrating tradeoffs.
- Stage 9Days 322–359
System Design (High-Level Design)
The round that separates a fresher from someone on a senior track.
Structure any design problem — clarify → estimate → API → data model → HLD → bottlenecks.
- Stage 10Days 360–379
DevOps
Nobody hires a backend engineer who can't containerise and ship their own work.
Dockerize your stack, build a CI/CD pipeline, set up monitoring that alerts correctly.
- Stage 11Days 380–397
Cloud (AWS)
Cloud is assumed, not asked. Missing it silently disqualifies you.
Deploy your flagship project to AWS end to end with infrastructure as code.
- Stage 12Days 398–413
Distributed Systems
Where "I built a CRUD app" becomes "I understand systems at scale".
Discuss microservices, Kafka, consensus and failure modes without hand-waving.
- Stage 13Days 414–437
AI Engineering — The Model, Prompting & Retrieval
An LLM application is a distributed system with a non-deterministic, expensive, untrusted component in the middle. Everything this stage teaches is a consequence of those three adjectives.
Ship a prompted feature and a retrieval service, both measured rather than claimed.
On another stack? This stage is written in Python on both tracks, and that is deliberate — the AI ecosystem is Python, end to end. Coming from Java, this is your crossing: the Python track's Stage 1 is the fastest way to get the syntax under you, and everything you learned about services, queues, indexes and idempotency in Stages 3, 5 and 9–12 applies here unchanged.
- Stage 14Days 438–461
AI Engineering — Agents, Safety & Production
The half that separates a demo from a system: bounded agents, a threat model with no prepared statement, and serving something that takes three seconds and returns 200 while broken.
Design, build and defend a production agent or RAG system — including where you chose not to use AI.
- Stage 15Days 462–488
Interview Conversion
Knowledge doesn't convert to offers on its own. This is the conversion layer.
Walk into any round — DSA, LLD, HLD, behavioural, project — and hold your ground.
What signing in actually adds
One thing: it remembers where you are. Ticked tasks, days marked read, and the track you picked are saved against your account so the pathway survives closing the tab. That is the whole difference — there is no paid tier underneath it and nothing is held back from anyone.
Sign-in is Google only, and the account stores your email, your ticks and your job applications. Nothing else. You can delete all of it from inside the app at any time.
